>> 10 Things You Should Know About Schools Fingerprinting Children <<

"If you put tomfoolery into a computer, nothing comes out of it but tomfoolery. But this tomfoolery, having passed through a very expensive machine, is somehow ennobled and no-one dares criticize it." Pierre Gallois

"Ah you don't even seem to know, Whose fingerprints are whose" Leonard Cohen

How does the scheme work in practice?

  • "(This) technology is similar to identification systems used in US prisons and by the German military." The Register

  • "While such scanning devices work well with adult fingerprints, they have trouble reading the prints of small children." School Library Journal

  • "When the fingerprint scanner doesn't work, the pupils simply use a pen and paper and make lists of who has what book... not a bad system for a few thousand pounds!" Concerned parent, East Riding Of Yorkshire, via email

  • "Ultimately, this is an optional module - the system works perfectly well without it" Andy O'Brien, managing director, Micro Librarian Systems.

  • "Some months ago our thumbprint scanner broke. They sent us a new one but it wouldn't work with our outdated software so we reverted to using the children's ID numbers. It has proved to be so much faster than the fingerprinting, which often didn't work anyway, that I can't see the point of using the scanner in future even if we do upgrade the software." Parent at a school that uses Junior Librarian, via email
